The Three Brains: Explained by Astrology

Mercury, Venus, and Mars are the three personal planets that are not luminaries– the Sun and Moon. When you start studying astrology, you'll see breakdowns that sound like this:

  • Mercury = communication

  • Venus = love & beauty

  • Mars = drive & action

It's not wrong, but it is boring.

We are human because of our consciousness. What if we started to think about the personal planets as different levels of consciousness?

We spend most of our lives in Mars & Mercury consciousness…

Mars consciousness is where we go when we sense danger. It's the animal brain that sends us into fight or flight. It's the part of our brain that runs on autopilot, alerting us of when we need to use the restroom, drink water, eat, or sleep. It also tips us off when we see a sexy person walk in front of us. It causes our eyebrows to raise and our hearts to beat faster. It's also the mode we operate in when doing business in the Western world. We tap into Mars brain, the masculine brain, when we need to negotiate or set boundaries.

Mercury consciousness, the left brain, is the most widely accepted and applauded form of consciousness, across all genders. It's almost elite. We show off our acquired Mercury consciousness when we hang our degrees in our offices and stick letters behind our names. This consciousness is the antithesis of the animal brain. It's logical. It's what makes sense. Mercury brain relies on order and systems to form ideas. The basis of Mercury consciousness is to collect and assimilate data and information to form conclusions. It isn't natural to spend all of our time in Mercury brain, yet we often do.

Venus consciousness is undervalued

Venus is the right brain, the brain of flow and chaos. Fantastic art does not come from logic, it is born of wild Venusian chaos. Yet, the "starving artist" archetype prevails because we place a much higher value on masculinity, logic, and the tangible. Venus represents what we make and gather from a starting point of nothing. We cannot use Mercury to access our inner knowing, it is a purely intangible manifestation of the inexplicable Venus– "because it just is."

Mars & Mercury are easily known because they take up space.

To know Venus, we must enter the black void that is the womb of creation. A space often untouched that births anything that ever was, is, and will be.
